LIVING OUTSIDE THE CITY
To spend 4 years of my life outside
Denpasar is not exactly my dream from the beginning. Growing up in such a big
city made me think there is no place to live in better than Denpasar. And yet,
here in Singaraja I live to obtain my first educational degree. It has been 2
years –more or less- I lived here, and there are plenty of things that
differentiate Singaraja, and Denpasar -my birthplace.
As the capital city of Bali,
Denpasar is such a crowded city. It is even said that Denpasar is the second
Jakarta, a metropolitan city. You can find traffic jam everywhere in Denpasar,
especially at working hours. Differ from Denpasar, Singaraja is far more quiet.
Although Singaraja is also a capital city, the traffic is not so crowd, which
is very relieving if you want to travel around. Morever, the food price in
Singaraja is rather lower than in Denpasar. It is very beneficial for students
who are still dependent.
Located in the northern part of
Bali, Singaraja city is considered more rural if it is compared to Denpasar.
There are a lot of things which you cannot find in Singaraja, but exist in
Denpasar. A huge department store, a complete bookstore, city club, or even
cinema can be easily found in Denpasar, but not in Singaraja. In addition, TV Broadcast
is a rare thing in Singaraja. Since Singaraja surrounded by high mountains and
hills, TV broadcast is so difficult to be obtained, unless you use parabolic
satellite or TV cable. In the other hand, Tv Broadcast would not be such a
problem in Denpasar.
Even though Singaraja and Denpasar
have several differences, apparently both of them have several similarities
too. Both Singaraja and Denpasar have a very intense sunlight that could burn
your skin. Even Singaraja is located near mountain; it has a very irritating
hot air just like in Denpasar. Not only that, both Denpasar and Singaraja also
share a common majority tourism object: beach. You can find plenty of beaches
on the southern part of Denpasar as well as on the northern part of Singaraja.
Every city has its own
characteristics, good things or bad things. We cannot judge whether one city is
better than another one. It always depends on what the subjects that we compare.
One thing that is undeniable is the statement “East, west, home is the best”
